A Walk in the Garden: A Father's Day Memory

My father died of cancer 16 years ago this July. The last gift I gave my father was a "Farmer Bear", made by The Vermont Teddy Bear Company, for Father's Day. A few short weeks later I got it back after my father's funeral. My father was a farmer and gardener. I wrote about him on my other blog, The Whimsical Fig.

Walks in my own garden bring sweet memories of my father. I think he would like my garden, though I know he'd certainly laugh at the fact that I have hired someone to plant and care for it. (Sorry, daddy... your little girl still has a black thumb.)

Walking through my garden is a way for me to feel connected to my father. The bumble bees, butterflies and grasshoppers remind me of the walks he and I use to take through his garden when I was a little girl. So I thought I'd share a few photos with you this Father's Day weekend... photos of my garden inspired by my father and his love of gardening.

Leave a comment below telling me some of your fond memories of your special moments with your daddy? I'd love to read them!

  1. What a lovely post Patti. I'm sure your Dad would have loved your garden even if you haven't planted it yourself! I'm not sure of my fondest moments with my Dad. I remember sitting drawing him from under the kitchen table while he worked. I also remember pizza nights where my sisters and I would get to make a mess decorating our homemade pizzas with him. He used to cook a lot and would make lovely British roast dinners every Sunday. I don't see him much now because he lives abroad but he's visiting in a few weeks to meet Lily for the first time which will be fun. Thanks for the great post x

  3. Beautiful post!!
My Dad always made sure that I ate breakfast every morning..."The Most Important Meal of The Day." He would cook me french toast and wrap it in a paper towel for me to bring to the bus stop :-)

  4. What a great post, and such gorgeous pictures. When I was little my dad would stand at the end of the bed and push me and my sister so we'd thump back and bounce on the mattress, and he'd say "Aw, siddown!"
We'd jump back up again, laughing, and he'd push us down again and say "Aw siddown!"
    over and over...

  5. Beautiful post and I love your garden pictures. My dad travelled a lot when I was young, but whenever he was home, he would always play sports and games with me. We spent hours together playing catch, pingpong, and handball. My kids recently spent the weekend with my parents and my dad was outside playing catch with them. I feel very lucky to still have him, and my mom with me!
