Terrarium Inspiration and Planting

One of my favorite retailers is Terrain. They have terrific buyers who fill the shop with gorgeous goods for the home and garden. I'm fortunate enough to live within 20 minutes of a Terrain. This past weekend I decided I'd plant the terrarium again. Technically, the planter belongs to my older son. When he was roughly 10 years old, he asked for a terrarium for his birthday. He enjoyed planting the terrarium for a couple of years, but with age comes other interests and eventually the glass planter found itself in storage.
This beautiful tree fungus (discovered during one of our hikes) inspired me.

On Saturday I collected the terrarium from storage, cleaned it up, and gave it another go. Terrain has an amazing selection of small terrariums, plants and accessories. Most plants are $5 each and accessories as low as $4, so the investment isn't a large one. I chose a handful of plants, a sweet faux mushroom and a jar of green glass bits. I already had a collection of fresh moss from a hike with my husband last week which completed look. Truth is, I seem to have a "black thumb", but every now and again I try planting something. Wish me luck!

I couldn't resist picking out a mini (faux) mushroom.
Matthew and I found this beautiful moss on our last hike.

Looks like a scene right from the forest.
Added the dome.

That little yellow flowering plant is clearly the star of the show!
Have a lovely week!

Color Palette: Succulent Shades

This time last year I was in the thick of planning my son's Bar Mitzvah. The photo above is from that special day. We used many plants in the green family, but these succulents were among my favorite that day. The beds of moss were also quite rich with color. I love that nestled in all of the greens and browns you could find a pop of vibrant pink and orange. Nature provides the best color palettes!

Autumn Inspiration: Giving Thanks

Today I received a shipment of Thanksgiving Cards I designed for a corporate account. I'm so happy with the way they came out! Here's a peek at the cards and the photos that inspired the design. I hope you're enjoying this Autumn weekend! Feel free to share in the comments below.

Inspiration - Seahorses at the Book Fair

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is "What inspires you?"  The truth is I get a lot of inspiration from my garden, and nature in general, because of the amazing color combinations, lines, angles and textures.  Nature isn't my only source of inspiration of course.  Life happens and brings with it experiences from travel or the simple day to day activities.  Recently a simple visit to a local library book fair provided me with my latest inspiration!  I took my twelve-year-old son to have a look (since he's our resident bookworm) and he discovered a lovely old book that is a collection of stories translated into Japanese.  He wanted the book not for the stories mind you, but because he was interested in the Japanese writing inside as well as the illustrated pictures.  When he showed me the book I was immediately inspired by the illustrations on the cover.

I love the whimsical grasses, shells and seahorses.  The drawings remind me of a recent trip to the New England Aquarium in Boston where I was able to get a few photos of their seahorses as they wrapped their "tails" around the wispy grasses.  It just so happens that seahorses are one of my favorite sea creatures and perhaps the reason I was so attracted to the cover of the old book.

As a result of the trip to the Aquarium and the discovery of the old book, I have created two new birth announcements featuring a seahorse among some sea grass.  They are printed on the most deliciously smooth, heavy weight vellum card stock and their envelopes feature a euro point flap.  Both will be available on my website at the end of August when I launch my new birth announcement line!
