Master Bedroom Update: Bedding

Yesterday I spoke about being creative this weekend, and today I walked the walk. I worked on our master bedroom a bit. There's still a lot of work/decor to tackle; new rug, address our seating, ceiling light, paint a few pieces of furniture, but I can check off "bedding" from the list.

Earlier today on Instagram I posted a little sneak peek of our new bedding. I received lovely feedback, which always makes me happy.

So here it is in the bigger picture! Sadly, by the time I got to taking photos, it was dark. Oh, well... you get the idea, right? It compliments my walls beautifully, even in evening lighting.

Part of my creative work today was replacing the knobs on our existing bed-side dressers. We'll eventually move these small dressers to the guest room, but for now, new knobs are a nice change. The lamps & bedding I picked up at HomeGoods! The knobsrope mirrors and ceramic knot hooks I purchased at Target. Our tufted bed is from Restoration Hardware. And that Blacksmith sign is from Ethan Allen. We bought the sign years ago and had it hanging above our mantle. About five years ago, we updated the fireplace and the sign went into storage (aka: the basement). I'm so happy to find a new home for it. It makes me so happy to bring it out of storage and enjoy it again. What do you think? Yay or nay?

I love that the ceramic urn lamps look aged. One of the things I've tried to do with our "new-er" home, is to age it a bit. The raised panels in several rooms, the color choices, the classic design elements all serve to age the house and add some character.
(you can see a little bit of our new white window panels in the mirror)

Next on the list is a new rug and addressing the seating. We have two comfy chairs that sit in the window, but the fabric is all wrong for this new scheme. I'm guessing I'll have fitted slip-covers made. I'm thinking a printed sailcloth or a nubby linen would be nice. I'll keep you posted!  For now, I'm going to enjoy our new white bedding and quilt. All in good time...

Happy Weekend and Sweet Dream!

Navy Blue Master Bedroom

This week our painters were here to paint the master bedroom. We've had a creamy white bedroom since we moved in in 2001. Although I did paint our bedroom once, I really only reinforced the builder's vanilla walls. Back then I had two kids under the age of 4 and I honestly couldn't find enough energy to focus on a big change.

With a major remodel taking place, and "real" painters doing the work, I decided to really go for it! My husband and I both love Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod and the styling of quaint New England coastal towns. So with that in mind, my hubby suggested navy blue walls. This might seem too bold for a master bedroom, but I was up for the challenge! I decided upon Benjamin Moore #1629 "Bachelor Blue". My master bathroom is Benjamin Moore "Rock Gray", so I knew I wanted a deep blue that would coordinate with the bathroom, but not be an exact match. I'm thrilled with the way it came out. The white mouldings and trim really pop against the blue walls. And since Bachelor Blue has quite a bit of grey in it, our grey linen bed looks great against the walls.

I can hardly wait to pull in new side tables, mirrors, lights etc. I'm not going to rush it. Part of the fun is the process! I'll leave you with a little sample of the wall change as well as some inspiration photos I've collected on Pinterest.

As you can see, we need to install door knobs. They've been selected. I posted a photo on Instagram of the style I chose. Classic glass knob on an oil-rubbed bronze rosette (back plate). The bathrooms will have polished nickel rosettes.

That's all for tonight. I really wanted to get today's post up earlier, but I've been working on a few custom designs! I'm looking forward to sharing those details as well. Wishing you all a lovely Thursday (what's left of it).

Exterior Before and After

It has been almost one full year since we began renovating our home. We started in the Spring of 2013 with new windows and exterior paint. Our painters are here today, working on the master bedroom. We didn't do anything major in the master, just added new doors, a chunky crown moulding and larger base moulding. Since they have to paint the trim and doors, I figured it's a good time to change the wall color as well. But I digress...

While cleaning out my closet, so it could also get a fresh coat of paint, I came across a photo of our home's exterior taken about a year after we moved in. I thought it would be fun to show you what a difference paint makes. Granted, we also have since added the new windows, updated some exterior moulding, added a circular drive and landscaped the property since moving in. That being said, you can see that just focusing on the paint change alone, made a huge difference! Below are photos of our house from 2001, 2012 and 2013.

just a few shrubs, no shutters and fairly bland

white paint, black shutters, circular drive and new landscaping goes a long way

new shutter color (Benjamin Moore- Wedgwood Gray), new windows (notice no half circle above second story window!)
I'll post photos of our bathrooms when they're 100% finished. I still have some minor details needing my attention. The same goes for my kitchen. We have just a few little things left to finish, then I'll post before and after shots!

Side note: Today is day 8 of NaBloPoMo and I'm feeling pretty good about it! Eight straight days of blogging... piece of cake!

Red, White and Blue

I was recently invited to pin onto The Daily Basics' Pinterest board "The Glorious Fourth" and I remembered I'd posted a quick and colorful dessert onto the blog The Whimsical Fig. Seems like a good idea to share that here as well! Though the 4th of July is over a month away, it's still fun to start planning the celebration!

First, the dessert (because that's how every day should start, right?).
  • Sliced Poundcake
  • Fresh Strawberries
  • Homemade Whipped Cream (extra vanilla added, please!)
  • Blue Sugar Crystals
That's really all you need for this fun, colorful and delicious dessert. I like to put my whipped cream into a pastry bag or regular plastic bag with the corner snipped so I can pipe the cream onto each plated dessert. You might just want to use a dollop of cream if you choose.

Inspired by the fabulous color combination of Red, White and Blue, I've also designed a set of festive paper placemats for your holiday gathering! They're perfect for adding a touch of the red, white and blue to your BBQ.
Last year I created free printables to top off your 4th of July dessert table. They're still available, so be sure to print up a set for your dessert table. They're great for Memorial Day as well.
Let me know in the comments if you're planning your own 4th of July celebration. Be sure to check out The Daily Basics site for great ideas on entertaining and home.
